Autumn Trees

Yesterday, we rode through woods in a horse-driven carriage. More on that later. One of the reasons for doing it was because the trees are showing their Autumn colours.

 

Carl Zimmer, over at the Loom, points out that there are two main theories as to why the leaves turn red and yellow in Autumn. I had always thought that it was simply a side-effect of the trees preparing for Winter, but it turns out there is another theory that has been proposed to account for it.
