Reflections on life at “De Witte Wand”…

A Day Out

We spent a weekend visiting friends in Sassenheim. On Saturday, we went for a stroll along the beach. It was the first time that our dog Kai had seen the sea. He was fascinated by the sand and the sea and spent most of the time galloping around and splashing through the surf.

Kai looks like he’s having a whale of a time!  I’ll have to get Monty to the sea.  Like Canute, he’ll probably bark at it, as if to make it go away.

And yes, that Geoff was you.

Coboró, thanks. Kai had a wonderful time. We could see that it made a real impression on him. I’m sure that he will continue to remember this. It’s the sort of moment that is likely to stay with you forever. I remember J. R. R. Tolkien saying (as an old man) that his first clear memory was bathing in the Indian Ocean when he was not quite two years old. And I can remember lying in my pram tasting bread and butter, where the butter had gone rancid in the heat. It’s the differentness of the memory that makes it stick, I’m sure.

I’m sure Monty will remember his first sight of the sea as well.
