Reflections on life at “De Witte Wand”…

Comet Neowise

There’s a field of maize at one side of our garden. Last night comet Neowise was clearly visible above the field.

Nicely photographed! You also have a much darker place than we do here in the Atlanta area. We went out to view it from a large open space with no lights to the west and north, but the the lights from the areas beyond made the sky glow hide the comet from my eyes. Our son could make it out with binoculars, but my old eyes failed. It barely shows in my photos, not worth sharing.

Thanks, Ludwig. This was the second night of attempting to photograph the comet. The first night’s shot were ruined because the focus was very slightly off – and there was not sufficient light from the comet and stars for me to realise it. Taught me to focus on infinity during daylight hours and make sure that I didn’t bump the focus ring on the following night…

I got a photo a few nights ago from my deck, but since we’re on a suburban street with lights it’s not as good as your photo. Due to the lights I didn’t actually see it with my naked eyes, so I just put my camera on a tripod, pointed it in the right direction, and snapped a photo in the “Stars” mode of my camera. Then I went back inside, transferred the image to my computer, and there it was. I cropped and tweaked a little. So here’s the comet, as seen by my camera from Coralville, Iowa:

PS: now we’re in the middle of the continent, but in Devonian times this place was a coral reef, hence the name.

Matthew, nice shot! The comet is fainter now than when I managed to get my shot. I tried again a couple of nights ago, and it was noticeably less visible. I wasn’t happy with the results this time.
