Taking in the Sun

Walking in the woods with the dog this morning, I heard a bird calling. The Merlin Bird ID app on my Xiaomi 17 Ultra said it was a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

I looked up, and there it was…

Addendum: Just learned from the BBC’s Springwatch programme that this is a juvenile, because it has a all-red crown. The adult male has a black crown with red at the back.
